Mumbai, Oct 27: Press conference on Bhima Koregaon arrests

Stretching to the very last day of the temporary relief of house arrest granted by the Supreme Court vide order dated 28th September 2018, the Sessions court in Pune rejected the bail applications for Advocate Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves, who were arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case on 28th August 2018. The Bombay High Court also did not extend the house arrests of Arun and Vernon. The Punjab and Haryana High court had earlier refused to grant relief in Sudha’s matter in light of the then pending bail application. This is even while the other two accused Gautam Navlakha and Prof Varavara Rao have been protected from arrest until 1st November 2018, and the Bombay High court has quashed the extension granted to the state to file chargesheet against earlier 5 accused, who have been under arrest since 6th June 2018.

Meanwhile Arun and Vernon have been arrested by the Pune police on the evening of 26th October 2018, even while the order in the Review petition filed before the Supreme Court from the order dated 28th September 2018 is awaited. Sudha similarly faces an imminent threat of arrest.

In light of these grave developments as of 26th October 2018, Mumbai Rises To Save Democracy, a campaign by over 40 organisations collectively fighting against the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, unlawful arrests on the pretext of the Bhima Koregaon case and against attacks on freedom of expression, is holding a press conference to discuss these court developments and the way forward.
